Taking Up Space: Why Building Community Matters

For a long time, I felt like I had to do everything on my own. Maybe it was stubbornness, maybe it was survival mode, or maybe it was just not wanting to be a burden. But here’s the thing—we’re not meant to do this alone. Community matters. Having people who understand, support, and show up…

For a long time, I felt like I had to do everything on my own. Maybe it was stubbornness, maybe it was survival mode, or maybe it was just not wanting to be a burden. But here’s the thing—we’re not meant to do this alone.

Community matters. Having people who understand, support, and show up for you is the difference between barely surviving and actually thriving.

Taking Up Space Isn’t Selfish

So many of us were taught to be small, to not ask for help, to not take up too much space. But the truth is, taking up space—physically, emotionally, and in your community—is not selfish. It’s necessary.

We need people. We need support. We need to know that when things get hard, there’s someone out there who gets it. And beyond that, we need to be those people for each other.

Why I’m Focusing on Community More Than Ever

I want Fern & Fog to be more than just a blog or a shop—I want it to be a space where people can learn, share, and actually support one another. That’s why I’m focusing on:

Teaching real skills – Herbalism, food preservation, and small-scale homesteading shouldn’t be gatekept. I want to pass down knowledge, just like it was passed to me. ✔ Creating access – Eventually, I want to use what I build here to give back, whether that’s providing food, comfort items, or simply a safe place to learn. ✔ Encouraging connection – Because none of us are meant to do this alone.

How You Can Take Up Space

Taking up space doesn’t have to mean loud, public action. It can be as simple as:

  • Asking for help when you need it.
  • Showing up for others in the ways you can.
  • Sharing what you know, even if it feels small.
  • Allowing yourself to exist without apologizing for it.

So if you’ve ever felt like you’re doing this alone, know that you don’t have to. We build community by showing up—for ourselves and for each other.
