You know, for someone who grew up on a farm, planting a garden every year, raising animals to eat (don’t come at me damn it, a girl’s gotta eat) and milk and all that….I always get nervous about starting a garden.
Yeah, I don’t know why either. It seems stupid, but man if that garden doesn’t do well that is so much money down the drain.
This year, I think more than most, is going to be important for growing our own food. No, I’m not fear mongering or trying to scare you more than you might already be. But, the political climate at this time does not give me confidence in a lot of things, and raising my own food just seems smarter than ever.
You don’t need a huge garden, you don’t need a lot of space. Hell, you don’t even really need to know what you’re doing (I mean, it helps yeah, but research everything!).
This year, since we live in a townhouse, I’m getting seeds for vegetables that are easily grown in containers. Migardner (out of Michigan) has these cute little peppers, and of course I’ll be getting tomatoes and cucumbers since the kids eat about 4 pints of those a week.
I’ll be getting more tomatoes, the larger bell peppers, some more herbs (to add to the ones already growing) and some fruit bushes to plant at the farm.
I should have already started my pepper plants but better late than never!
I won’t be growing our meat (I don’t have the time to do all that this year unless we move closer to the farm), but I have a good butcher that gets his meat locally and provides a large variety of meats and even some cheeses.
This is definitely a journey you can watch on Facebook as we get closer to planting time!
Are/Do you grow your own food or have a garden? Are you planning to this year? What are you going to grow?
