Halloween is a holiday with roots deeper than candy and costumes. Its origins trace back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-en”), celebrated around November 1st as a way to honor the end of harvest and the start of winter. The Celts believed that on Samhain night, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead thinned, allowing spirits to roam freely. This belief gave rise to practices like lighting bonfires and wearing costumes to ward off unfriendly spirits.

When Christianity spread, the church incorporated Samhain into its calendar as All Saints’ Day, or “All Hallows,” with the night before (October 31) becoming “All Hallows’ Eve” – eventually shortened to Halloween. Today, Halloween mixes centuries of traditions from diverse cultures and beliefs, combining the mystical, the sacred, and the silly.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Today:

  1. Host a Movie Marathon: Dive into the spooky season with classics like Hocus Pocus or more chilling tales if you’re up for it!
  2. Bake Spooky Treats: Get creative with Halloween-themed cookies, cakes, or popcorn mixes to munch on during your movie night.
  3. Costume Parade: Whether you’re going out or staying in, dressing up is half the fun! Have a mini costume parade or photo shoot at home.
  4. Make a ‘Boo Basket’: Surprise a friend or neighbor by leaving a basket of treats on their doorstep with a little note that says they’ve been “boo-ed” and pass the spooky spirit on.

Why Halloween Matters

Halloween gives us a chance to lean into our imagination, letting adults and kids alike escape everyday routines. It’s a celebration that encourages creativity, community, and play. Plus, honoring where Halloween began – remembering those who came before us – can bring a deeper meaning to the night. So carve those pumpkins, light a candle, and enjoy every delightfully eerie moment!
