Fern and Fog

This is a post from my old blog which still resonates today.

So, I was looking around the internet for blog ideas. You know, what to specialize in for your blog. I got, write about your passion! and write what you are good at! I don’t think that’s going to work for me though.

I am really passionate about my family (who wants to read about that all day long?), cooking/baking gluten free, and apparently struggling to constantly be organized and not spend a shit ton of money.

But also, I want to teach kids and adults how to cook. Easy meals, nothing too complicated, I’m not that kind of cook.I don’t have the time and energy to do a recipe site. I usually cook food I’ve made my entire life and just make it gluten free if it isn’t already. I’ll hunt down a recipe online and use it for a starting point if I need to. I go by taste, not usually a full recipe.

I’m not a chef. I didn’t go to culinary school, or anything like that. I feed my friends and family and have been doing it for years. I’m the one they call when a recipe goes wrong, they need a substitution or if they need something made and they just don’t have time.

I cooked in (and managed) a lot of restaurants, diners and school cafeterias.I am not an expert about families and relationships. I didn’t go to school for that either (or anything for that matter), but I do have a ton of empathy and study people.

I pay attention to them. I like to make them feel good. I am a helper. I am definitely not an expert on babies, although I have helped raise most of my 20 nieces and nephews. And now have a young kid of my own.

I know a little bit about a lot of things, so how do you turn something like that into a niched blog? Maybe you don’t.

You just write about what you know and if someone learns something, that’s even better.
